About the Band

Introduction

A group of past members of the Bromley Youth Concert Band formed XBY Concert Band in 1989. The name XBY is derived from ex-Bromley Youth to represent this association between the players.

XBY Concert Band has established a reputation as one of the foremost symphonic wind bands in the United Kingdom. Its success has emerged through repeated achievements at the National Concert Band Festival Finals by gaining two silver and five gold awards. The band has also achieved acclaim for winning a first prize in 2005 & 2001 at the World Music Contest in Kerkrade, Holland and a second prize in 1997.

Around 200 players have had some association with the Band since its formation and there are currently around 40 regular players. Some members have completed courses of study at music colleges and universities and are now professional musicians. However, the majority of members are either studying or pursuing careers in other areas and welcome this opportunity to keep up their music in their spare time.

XBY's musical director

Since 1989, XBY Concert Band has secured a valuable relationship with Musical Director Dennis Mycroft.

Dennis Mycroft studied trombone and conducting at Trinity College, gaining an advanced conducting scholarship in 1977. In addition to part-time teaching and working in the theatre, his freelance orchestral career included performing with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Richard Hickox Orchestra and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. He then turned his attention towards developing teaching and conducting as a full-time career.

Dennis is Head of Brass Teaching for the Bromley Youth Music Trust, being actively involved in the training of young musicians and conducting the XBY Concert Band. We are grateful for his continued support.

Rehearsals

XBY Concert Band rehearses every Monday evening in term-time from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at the Bromley Youth Music Trust, Southborough Lane, Bromley, Kent (see map).

If you are an ex- Bromley Youth Concert Band player of any age (whether or not you still practise!) you are most welcome to turn up and join us at any rehearsal.

We often have vacancies for other wind band players to help fill gaps. We are especially short of percussion, as well as trumpet and trombone players. If you are a local wind or brass player of an advanced standard and you would like to either join us regularly or be added to our player database for events, please contact us.
